Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

Can I receive reimbursement through ESA?

Our families have received reimbursement for Christian Speech League membership and tournament fees.

I signed up. How do I use Christian Speech League?

Once you log-in, you'll be ready to use all the online resources.

There's a video about Christian Speech League to start you off! Then, the free online public speaking course is first with tournament information and speech events following it. Feel free to look around at the lessons and resources.

I'd recommend you work through all 14 public speaking lessons in order. At the same time you start the lessons, read the information about each speech event. Then, choose a speech event or two to compete in at the next tournament. Follow the tournament rules and recommended steps for speech writing and practice.

Please feel free to email me with any questions: Julie Fritz ChristianSpeechLeague@gmail.com

What is professional business attire?

Tournament attire:

Boys

  • dress shirt and tie

  • suit or sport coat and slacks

  • dress shoes

Girls

  • dress or blouse with slacks/skirt

  • blazer

  • dress shoes

Closed-toed dress shoes are appropriate for tournaments. Students can bring casual shoes to wear in-between rounds.

What do parents wear?

You are welcome to wear anything comfortable. Parents usually wear nice shirts or blouses with casual pants or jeans. We suggest you bring a sweater in case it's cold in the judging rooms.

What about meals?

Students bring lunches to eat outside or in the student hangout room. Parents are welcome to enjoy breakfast and lunch in the judges' lounge.

Do we have to join a speech & debate club?

No, you can use the videos and online resources to help you prepare for tournaments at home.

What are parent responsibilities at tournaments?

Every family needs at least one parent or adult to judge throughout the tournament day. We invite community judges too. Please feel free to bring friends and family to judge.

What are community judges?

Community judges are judges who aren't competitors' parents. We invite neighbors, church members, co-workers, etc. to help judge to keep our tournaments running smoothly. We love our community judges!

What time do we arrive?

Plan to arrive early!

Check-in is usually 7:30AM for welcome announcements and a get-to-know-you game for students. This also gives students time to practice before the first round starts and get their belongings settled in the student hangout room.

Can I bring my younger children to tournaments?

If your children are able to tag along with you while you judge, feel free to bring them!

If you are bringing young littles that aren't old enough to sit quietly, please have both parents or two adults attend the tournament so you can divide and conquer the duties of parenting and judging.

I'm not comfortable judging. Do I have to judge?

Yes, as a parent you will judge, but don't worry as we'll train you and help you through the whole day! The online resources include judge training. There is also an in-person training scheduled 45 minutes before every round at tournaments.

Almost all of our judges are nervous the first time. Just like the students competing, it's difficult to try something new, but you can do it!

Each competition room has at least two judges so you won't be alone in the process. We have experienced parents to answer questions. We'll be there to help you every step of the way. You'll soon learn what a blessing it is to pour into these students' lives.

Can grandparents or friends come watch?

Family and friends are welcome at tournaments! Often those coming to watch enjoy judging too. We have some "community judges" who return tournament after tournament as it's such a rewarding experience to hear the next generation speak about God.

Can students compete in more than one speech?

Yes! Most students enjoying competing in more than one speech event.

Can my older teen judge?

We love families who judge together and welcome older teens. Judges need to be high school graduates.
